What are Antioxidants and how do they work?

Antioxidants prevent or delay cell damage. They protect the body from damage caused by harmful molecules called free radicals.

Free radicals are the atoms, ions or molecules which have an unpaired electron, which makes them unstable and highly reactive. The damage is caused when these free radicals start attacking the healthy cells in an attempt to replace their missing electron. When the attacked molecule loses its electron it becomes a free radical itself and hence, starts disturbing the other healthy cells. This process becomes a chain reaction and thereby, disrupting millions of molecules. This chain reaction is called Oxidation Stress.

This oxidation stress is the major cause of Arthritis, Premature aging, cancer and many more. So the answer to saving our healthy cells from this oxidation is Anti-oxidation.
Antioxidants protect against heart disease and strokes. Free radicals are formed by cigarette smoking, pollution, radiation, sometimes through stress, lack of exercise and sleep.
